For whom is Study Abroad?

The study abroad programme is designed for second, third or fourth year students currently enrolled at universities as well as graduates of diploma and Bachelor courses. The Study Abroad Programme enables current students to combine a period of residence abroad with an educational programme. You will gain academic credit towards your degree in your country of origin.

Why study abroad?

The study abroad experience is a perfect way to immerse and integrate in a new culture and get introduced to the well renowned Dutch education system. You will be able to take classes alongside students from all over the world and in the same time gain first hand experience of the famous Dutch problem based learning educational system. Students can choose from unique minors like for example Adventure Tourism, Cruise Management and Real Estate Management or learn the secrets of European Retailing.

The programme

All students will start with an introduction week, introducing them to the learning system (Problem Based Learning) and to the Dutch culture. Our CHN Study Abroad Programmes, for both International students and students from EU member countries, commence twice a year, in the autumn (fall) and spring semesters. Each semester is divided into two periods. Students can select two minors per semester. You can come for one or two semesters. Students choosing to come for two semesters have the opportunity to follow their second semester at campus sites in Qatar, Thailand, South Africa or China.

Minors in South Africa and Thailand

Besides the main campus of the CHN in the Netherlands, the CHN also has campuses abroad in Thailand, South Africa, Qatar and China. Students who enroll at the CHN campus Leeuwarden for the full year, can choose a country specific minor in South Africa or Thailand for their second semester.

Study Start Week

There is an introduction before formal teaching begins, which includes reception, registration and orientation. Students are fully integrated into the academic and social life of the CHN. The University has a club for social activities (Hestia) and offers a wide range of sports and recreational facilities.

170 | Englischsprachige Kurse und der internationale Charakter der »School of Graduate Studies« an der CHN University in Leeuwarden sprechen zunehmend deutsche Interessenten an, die sich für ein Masterstudium in der friesischen Hauptstadt entscheiden.

»Ich kann das jedem empfehlen«, sagt Marlies Böckenhauer, 25 Jahre alt, die gerade ihren »Master of Arts in International Service Management« geschafft hat. »Für eine attraktive Berufsperspektive ist Mehrsprachigkeit ein starker Pluspunkt. Mir wird das jedenfalls eine Menge helfen«.

Am Freitag, 8. Juni 2007, führt die School of Graduate Studies der CHN in Leeuwarden einen Informationsabend durch, von 16 bis 20 Uhr. Eingeladen sind vor allem auch Interessenten aus Deutschland, die ein FH- oder Uni-Diplom in der Tasche haben (oder auch einen Bachelorabschluss) und sich für ihr Berufsfeld vertieft qualifizieren wollen. Es gibt an jenem Freitag die Möglichkeit, mit den Studiengangsleitern der Masterprogramme zu sprechen und auch einführende Vorlesungen zu erleben.

Die School of Graduate Studies bietet seit vielen Jahren mehrere erfolgreiche, akkreditierte und international orientierte Masterstudiengänge an:

• Management in Dienstleistungsbranchen (Service Management),
• Management im Einzelhandel (Retail Management),
• Hotel- und Restaurantmanagement (Hospitality Management)
• Freizeit- und Tourismuswissenschaften (Leisure and Tourismus Studies).

Als Vollzeitangebot in Leeuwarden dauern diese Masterstudiengänge ein Jahr, sie sind aber auch als berufsbegleitendes Studium in Friesland sowie an anderen Orten, auch in NRW, möglich und dauern dann zwei Jahre.

Der hochmoderne Campus in Leeuwarden bietet den Studenten eine einzigartige »study landscape«, eine gut sortierte internationale Bibliothek und moderne Kommunikationstechniken an. Besonders die berufsbegleitend Studierenden profitieren von der online verfügbaren Lernumgebung mitsamt Podcast- und Vodcast-Angeboten.

Die sehr international ausgerichtete CHN mit ihren mehr als 7.000 Studenten aus 60 Ländern lehrt ein breites Spektrum an ökonomischen und sozialen Fächern. Mit Niederlassungen in Südafrika, Qatar, Thailand und ab 2008 auch in China sowie mit Partnern in Europa, Asien und USA bildet die CHN ihre Studenten für eine weltweite Karriere aus.

Diese internationale Ausstrahlung war es, die Marlies Böckenhauer dazu brachte, ihren Studienplatz in Hamburg mit dem in Leeuwarden zu tauschen. »In Hamburg studierte ich ›Business Administration‹, aber alles geschah in deutscher Sprache, das reichte mir nicht. In Holland eröffnete sich mir die Welt, weil dort viel mehr ausländische Studenten teilnahmen. Da ich nunmal die englische Sprache gut beherrsche, kann ich mir in viel mehr Ländern einen guten Job aussuchen. Wenn ich nochmals wählen sollte: es wäre wieder Leeuwarden!», erzählt sie mit Begeisterung. Während ihrer Praktika in Amsterdam und Hamburg konnte sie verschiedene Marktforschungen begleiten. Kaum hatte sie ihren Master in der Tasche, landete sie bereits in einer internationalen Studentenorganisation mit Niederlassungen in aller Welt.

Leeuwarden zählt knapp 100.000 Einwohner und ist die Hauptstadt der niederländischen Provinz Friesland. Gleich drei Hochschulen sorgen hier dafür, dass es viele Möglichkeiten zur studentengemäßen Freizeitgestaltung und eine Menge kulturelle Angebote gibt. Die deutschen Studenten rühmen die Gastfreundlichkeit, Toleranz und die netten Umgangsformen. Mehrere hundert deutsche Studenten haben sich in diesem Jahr bereits für ein CHN-Studium entschieden. Selbststudium und Gruppenarbeit kennzeichnen das niederländische Studiensystem.

Interessenten für die Masterangebote, die doppelt akkreditiert sind und daher auch mit einem doppelten Abschluss (CHN Leeuwarden und London Metropolitan University) enden, sind herzlich eingeladen zum Tag der Offenen Tür am Freitag, 8. 168 | For several years now, Fryslân and Sichuan Province – with over 100 million inhabitants – share a good friendship. All kinds of business activities (f. i. agricultural and construction works projects) have been established in the past years. Now the Frisian CHN University is preparing a site in China.

The new CHN Global Campus Site China project benefits of the excellent relationships between Sichuan and Frisian government. An overwhelming welcome to a delegation from Fryslân was shown by the Chinese hosts last week:

To underline the special relationship and in order to thank Sichuan Government for all their support, a delegation from Fryslân – Theo Hooghiemstra, CHN director of international affairs, Piet Bijman, Vice Governor of the Province of Fryslân, and Siek Postma, staffmember of the Frisian Economics Department – had the honour to discuss this great project with mr. Bao-Ming Cheng, Deputy Secretary General, Prof. Dr. Wang Fenxiong, Vice Minister of Educational Affairs and mr. Tan Xin, Vice Director General, Department of Foreign Affairs.

Two days later, our Chinese partners, mr. Yan Yu Dae (owner of Sichuan Derui Education Corporation) and mr. Claude Kok (owner of Royalton Investments) visited the CHN at Leeuwarden.

Mr. Yan, being ›on board‹ as a new partner in our project, visited CHN for his first time and showed his enthousiasm on CHN’s teaching facilities and Problem Based Learning education concept.

Next to a meeting with CHN’s board, a tour along the facilities and Hotel Wyswert, our guests were introduced to CHN’s deans, the director of the oncoming University Friesland and the supporting staff members.
